Recently I read an article in the McKinsey Quarterly called "Seven Ways China Might Surprise Us in 2009" and I wrote about a way that I thought was not very much explored in the article. Here is my letter (which might get published in the print version of the McKinsey Quarterly):

"Hi,

I truly appreciated your article since I am a great fan of Chinese culture and business. I have recently traveled to China for the first time as part of my MBA experience, so I am by no means an expert in the country. However, I have noticed a few things that have made me believe in China's ability to surprise:

1. The population's tremendous urge to learn and work hard with a long term vision for the effort
2. The strength of a 2000 + year old imperialistic culture, very different from the Western culture
3. A heterogeneous society, bursting at the seams because of conflict and lack of space and resources.

These dynamic forces shape China today, which leads me to the following reflection about China's ability to surprise in 2009:

China will realize its commercial imperialism ambitions by conquering the African continent, China's new Far West. At that point China will control probably close to 1/3 of the world's natural resources, which in combination with their manufacturing and now growing technology hegemony, will allow it to effectively influence, if not control, to course of global economy and politics.

Just an idea...

Sincerely,

George Angel
